Expand your business & mindset: Shadow work 101

Entrepreneurship is the ultimate personal growth journey.

Whether you’re building your dream business or scaling to new heights, the journey often brings moments of doubt, fear, people-pleasing or self-sabotage.

It can feel like you’re a puppet, with unseen strings pulling you into the same reactions and patterns you struggle to break. That’s your shadow at work.

What if these moments weren’t roadblocks, but instead the key to your greatest growth? Shadow work isn’t about fixing yourself; it’s about uncovering and integrating the parts of you that are holding you back so you can finally step into the fearless, visionary leader you’re meant to be.

What Is Shadow Work?

Shadow work is the process of uncovering the hidden parts of yourself—emotions, behaviours, and beliefs running your life on autopilot. Shadow work is the practice of exploring the "shadow self" - the avoided, repressed, or rejected parts of your psyche. Coined by psychologist Carl Jung, the shadow contains everything we hide from ourselves or others, often out of fear, shame, or societal conditioning.

For example:

  • Constantly procrastinating on launching your idea out of a fear of failure.

  • Struggling to set boundaries with clients due to your people-pleasing tendencies.

  • Feeling like an imposter despite your achievements given your internal relationship perfectionism.

For entrepreneurs, these shadows create roadblocks that limit growth, steal energy, and sabotage success. Shadow work helps you cut the strings, take full responsibility for your actions, and finally create the results you want - on your terms.

With shadow work: - I want these to be counter to the examples to below. Essentially the opposite and what a healthy person who has done shadow work in the context of being an entrepreneur would show up instead…

  • Constantly procrastinating on launching your idea out of a fear of failure.

  • Struggling to set boundaries with clients due to your people-pleasing tendencies.

  • Feeling like an imposter despite your achievements given your internal relationship perfectionism.

Why Do Shadow Work?

Shadow work helps you uncover internal obstacles so you can move forward with resilience, unlock hidden potential, and explore uncharted areas of your mindset and business strategies.

“Love and light” work is a start, but it only gets you so far. I know, because I’ve been there and I’ve done it all. Manifesting, affirmations, etc. True transformation requires facing the hard stuff: the parts of you you’d rather avoid.

Shadow work has life-changing potential. By working with your shadows, you can:

  • Improve Self-Awareness - Understand your hidden traits and respond more thoughtfully in challenging situations.

  • Create Healthier Relationships - Accepting the parts of ourselves that we find harder to love makes us more empathetic and less judgmental of others.

  • Find Inner Peace and Authenticity - Integrating your shadow reduces inner conflict because??, allowing you to live freely and authentically.

  • Free Yourself from Triggers - Confronting unresolved wounds decreases their power over your emotions and actions.

  • Boost Creativity and Energy - The energy spent suppressing your shadow can be redirected to creative and personal pursuits.

Misconceptions About Shadow Work

Many people have a distorted view of shadow work. Let’s set the record straight:

  • “Shadow work is too scary!” - Shadow work isn’t about being hard on yourself; it’s about being curious and compassionate. Think of it as a process of gentle discovery rather than harsh criticism.

  • “I don’t have a shadow.” - Everyone does! Shadows are a part of being human. They’re not flaws; they’re opportunities for growth.

  • “It’s about dwelling on what’s wrong with me.” - Shadow work isn’t about judging yourself. It’s about owning every part of yourself and stepping into the role of a resilient, empowered leader.

Uncovering Your Shadows

Your ego acts like a shield, keeping you "safe" by hiding uncomfortable truths. While this protection served you at one point, it now keeps you stuck. It’s important to note that your ego isn’t the enemy. It’s a defence mechanism designed to protect you, but you need to step into the role of your higher self to challenge and outgrow it.

Awareness is the first step toward transformation.

  1. Observe Your Reactions - Shadows often reveal themselves in emotional triggers. Reflect on:

  • Who or what irritates you?

  • Where do you feel defensive or ashamed?

  • What excuses do you repeat?

2. Examine Your Contradictions - Shadows thrive in the gap between your intentions and actions.

  • You preach balance but work 80-hour weeks.

  • You value confidence but downplay your success to others.

3. Look for Patterns - Shadows often create repetitive struggles. Reflect on:

  • Where do you keep hitting the same walls?

  • How do these patterns affect your business, relationships, or self-care?

Whether you’re just starting your entrepreneurial journey or navigating a challenging new chapter, understanding how your shadow self shows up allows you to build a foundation for genuine transformation.
